PhonePe Launches UPI 123Pay for Feature Phone Users
· Technology · Times of India, Gadgets360
Fintech major PhonePe has launched UPI 123Pay, enabling feature phone users across India to make digital transactions without an internet connection. The service relies on a proprietary technology stack and an SMS-based architecture to ensure reliability in areas with limited connectivity. PhonePe has partnered with handset manufacturers such as Nokia, HMD, Lava International and itel to pre-bundle the service on their devices. The platform allows users to make peer-to-merchant payments and QR code payments, alongside account management and balance checks. To assist first-time users, the company introduced a voice-first, AI-powered helpline available in English and 12 Indian languages.
Why it matters
Extending UPI payments to an estimated 200 million feature phone users removes internet dependency as a barrier to digital commerce, bringing millions of unserved consumers into India's formal financial ecosystem.
