Pioneering Cardiologist Dr G Vijayaraghavan Passes Away at 84

Renowned cardiologist Dr G Vijayaraghavan, who introduced the 2D echocardiography test to India, died in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday at the age of 84. A Padma Shri awardee in 2009, he established India's first 2D echocardiography laboratory at Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram during the late 1970s. Dr Vijayaraghavan partnered with an India-US venture to bring the first 2D echocardiography scanner to the medical college, revolutionising non-invasive heart care in the country. He also conducted extensive pioneering research on tropical endomyocardial fibrosis and developed treatments for Cerebra Odollum poisoning. Throughout his career, he trained numerous doctors across India in emerging cardiac imaging technologies.
