Playing Phone Audio on Speaker in Trains Can Lead to Fine and Jail

· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times

Southern Railway has warned passengers that playing music or videos in speaker mode on trains and at railway stations can attract a penalty of Rs 1,000 and removal from railway premises. Individuals who persist with the behavior can face up to six months in jail and a fine of up to Rs 5,000. The zone has invoked Section 142 of the Railways Act, as amended under the Jan Vishwas Act, to address the growing nuisance. Officials stated that other railway zones and Metro systems can also invoke these provisions to protect passenger comfort. The initiative follows a circular issued to divisions to educate travellers and curb loud conversations and objectionable ringtones.

Why it matters

Rail passengers across India frequently face disturbances from loud mobile audio inside coaches, making this enforcement a direct relief for travellers seeking a quieter journey.
