PM Modi Discusses Republic Day Invite for Canada PM Carney
· World · Times of India, Zee News
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reaffirmed their commitment to finalise the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and double bilateral trade by 2030 during a phone call on Tuesday. Modi will visit Canada in December en route to the G20 summit in the US, with the trade agreement expected during that trip. India is discussing a possible visit by Carney in January as chief guest for Republic Day celebrations. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu are currently visiting India to advance shared priorities in trade, energy and people-to-people ties. The leaders welcomed increased engagement over the past year in finance, defence, security and artificial intelligence, and agreed to remain in close contact ahead of Modi's December visit.
Why it matters
Strengthening India-Canada trade ties could boost market access for Indian exporters and attract Canadian investment in sectors like energy and technology. A Republic Day invitation for Carney would signal deepening strategic partnership between the two countries.
