PM Modi Inaugurates Final Sections of Western Dedicated Freight Corridor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated the last three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), completing the 1,506-km network after nearly two decades. The final 326 route-km project includes New Sanand North-New Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-New JNPT, built at a cost exceeding Rs 20,700 crore. This infrastructure stands as the world's first fully electrified corridor designed for routine double-stack container operations, linking industrial hubs in Uttar Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) near Mumbai. With this completion, India's total dedicated freight network reaches 2,843 km, including the previously completed Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.
Why it matters
The corridor will significantly reduce logistics costs and carbon emissions by allowing double-stack container trains to move faster between northern and western India.
