PM Modi Lauds Jan Dhan Yojana for Financial Inclusion

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted the impact of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, noting that 590 million bank accounts have been opened over the last 12 years. The scheme has accumulated deposits totaling ₹3.16 lakh crore, with approximately 78% of these accounts located in rural and semi-urban areas. Women account holders represent 56% of the total beneficiaries under the initiative. Launched on August 28, 2014, the program provides zero-balance accounts, RuPay debit cards, and accident insurance coverage. The government stated that the growing deposits reflect increased engagement with formal banking and improved saving habits among citizens.

The scheme serves as a primary vehicle for Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), ensuring government subsidies reach millions of beneficiaries in rural and unorganized sectors without intermediaries.
