· World · BBC News, The Independent

Sussex Police have named Hassan El-Khawas, 55, Zeina Alayn, 37, and their 14-year-old daughter Sara El-Khawas as the victims who died after getting into difficulty in the water off Shoreham. A younger girl from the same family remains in critical condition at a hospital following the incident near Shoreham Fort on Tuesday. Investigators stated that CCTV footage suggests the deaths were a tragic accident with no third-party involvement. The family, who were British citizens of Palestinian origin, had travelled from their London home to visit the coastal town. Emergency services, including coastguard crews and air ambulances, responded to the scene shortly before 15:00 BST.

Why it matters

The incident has prompted warnings from authorities regarding the dangers of open water swimming, even during warmer weather, due to the risk of cold-water shock.
