Police search former DMK minister Anbil Mahesh’s home in private school fraud case
· India · Indian Express, The Hindu
Police from the Central Crime Branch in Chennai conducted searches at the Tiruchi residence of former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Wednesday, as part of an investigation into a multi-crore fraud involving private schools during the previous DMK government. The operation, which began at 7:30 AM, also included searches at six locations in Chennai and Tiruchi linked to the former minister. Allegations centre on large sums—estimated at ₹100 crore—collected from private-school managements in exchange for promises of official clearances, including school upgrades, permanent recognition, and building plan approvals. The investigation has already led to the arrest of B T Arasakumar, accused of operating an unregistered organisation called the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association. Veteran DMK leader K N Nehru was denied entry to Poyyamozhi’s residence during the search.
Why it matters
The case directly impacts private school owners and students in Tamil Nadu, who may face delays or uncertainty in obtaining critical approvals, and raises broader questions about governance and corruption in the state’s education sector. The political fallout for the DMK, including potential reputational damage and internal scrutiny, could also influence upcoming electoral dynamics.
