Police Visit Abhishek Banerjee's Residence With Summons in Billboard Row

· India · Times of India, The Hindu

Kolkata Police visited Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's Kalighat residence on Sunday to serve a summons notice. A team from Shakespeare Sarani police station delivered the notice after initial hesitation from household staff. The case stems from an August 27 incident on Camac Street in central Kolkata, where police and Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials attempted to remove a billboard bearing TMC insignia. The removal attempt led to clashes and protests, resulting in three registered FIRs and separate notices from the fire department. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh condemned the police action, criticising its timing with Durga Puja approaching.

Why it matters

The ongoing police action against a senior ruling-party leader escalates political friction in West Bengal ahead of major festival celebrations.
