· India · Indian Express, India Today, Zee News
Ahead of Durga Puja in West Bengal, hundreds of posters have appeared in Siliguri and Sonarpur urging people to purchase Biryani, meat, and Puja items exclusively from Hindu traders. Leaders of the Hindu Jagran Manch, an organisation claiming responsibility for the campaign, stated that the move is intended to support Hindu businesses during the festive season. The Opposition has strongly criticised the posters, with CPM state secretary Md Salim describing the initiative as an attempt at economic ostracism and community division. Trinamool Congress leader Krishanu Mitra also condemned the campaign, while police and local authorities have not yet announced any official action regarding the posters.
Why it matters
This campaign targets local minority-owned businesses and heightens communal tensions during West Bengal's largest festival season.
