Prakash Raj, Groups Urge Karnataka Government to Halt Voter Deletions
· India · India Today, Hindustan Times
Actor Prakash Raj and several civil society groups have written to Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to intervene in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The signatories claim that 1.09 crore voters have been placed on the ASDDO list, alleging that Karnataka has the highest proportion of proposed voter deletions in the country. They warned that nearly half of Bengaluru’s voters could be removed, citing potential deletions exceeding 60 per cent at nearly 3,000 polling booths. The groups have demanded a three-month extension for the enumeration process and a shift to a year-long systematic revision. They further urged the state government to conduct fresh door-to-door verification and approach the Supreme Court if necessary to protect voting rights.
Why it matters
The potential removal of over 1 crore voters from electoral rolls threatens the democratic participation of a significant portion of Karnataka's population, particularly in Bengaluru.
