Prashant Bhushan Calls for Regime Change Amid Protests

· India · Times of India, Indian Express

Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan stated during a press conference in New Delhi that a regime change would be justified if the government continues to undermine electoral democracy. Addressing reporters alongside AISA president Neha Bora and CJP founder Abhijit Dipke, Bhushan rejected accusations that the ongoing opposition agitations amounted to an unlawful overthrow attempt, asserting that creating political disaffection is a democratic right. The remarks coincided with protests organized by the Cockroach Janta Party and opposition groups against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision exercise. During the same briefing, Bora criticized authorities for alleged restrictions on media coverage and the mistreatment of a woman journalist. In response, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari accused the opposition and Bhushan of attempting to legitimise anarchy rather than engaging in democratic resistance.

Why it matters

The escalating confrontation between senior legal figures, opposition groups, and the ruling party over electoral oversight highlights deepening political polarization in the country.
