Pregnant Woman and Newborn Die in Rewa Hospital Following C-Section

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times

A 25-year-old pregnant woman and her newborn baby died at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, prompting a formal official inquiry. The woman, Kalpana Mishra, was admitted on August 25 and underwent a C-section on August 26, after which her condition deteriorated. In videos recorded prior to her death, she appeared distressed and pleaded with her family to take her home. Her father, Ramsharan Mishra, accused hospital staff of ignoring requests for adequate medical attention and demanded the suspension of the on-duty doctor. Hospital Superintendent Dr Rahul Mishra stated that the family had failed to complete the required eight antenatal check-ups, noting she had only undergone two private examinations, and added that her blood pressure and heart rate had spiked before she lost consciousness.

Why it matters

The tragedy raises urgent questions about maternal healthcare standards, prenatal monitoring protocols, and accountability in government hospitals.
