Prem Singh Chandumajra quits SAD (Punar Surjit), may rejoin Badal-led party
· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express
Akali leader Prem Singh Chandumajra resigned from the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) on Wednesday, marking the latest departure from the breakaway faction ahead of Punjab's assembly polls. Chandumajra indicated he is likely to return to the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), citing misalignment with SAD (Punar Surjit) president Giani Harpreet Singh. Before him, several other leaders—including former minister Surjit Singh Rakhra, MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali, Iqbal Singh Jhundan, and Barjinder Singh Brar—have quit SAD (Punar Surjit), with Rakhra joining AAP and Ayali joining Akali Dal Waris De. SAD welcomed Chandumajra's resignation and urged all Panthic leaders to reunite under its banner for Punjab's interests.
Why it matters
The loss of another senior Akali leader weakens the SAD (Punar Surjit) ahead of Punjab's assembly elections, strengthening the Badal-led SAD's chances of consolidating Akali support. Several senior leaders have now left the breakaway faction, further consolidating the original SAD's position as the main Akali front.
