Premier League to Release Referee and VAR Judgements for First Time

· Sports · BBC Sport, Sportstar

The Premier League will publish the full judgments of its Key Match Incidents Panel for the first time this season. The panel, made up of five members – former players, coaches, and representatives from the Premier League and PGMO – meets weekly to review every major incident. In addition to the judgments, the league will post direct quotes from referees and VAR officials explaining their decisions on the Match Centre X account, the website and the app. The updated RefCam will, for the first time, broadcast non‑live audio of the referee communicating with players during a game, although VAR conversations remain prohibited by IFAB. The transparency move follows the league’s earlier decision to publish explanations of officials and to exploit RefCam audio more broadly. The Premier League says the releases will give fans full insight into how decisions are evaluated while the IFAB continues discussions on sharing more live VAR communication.

Why it matters

Clubs and supporters will gain a clearer understanding of referee and VAR calls, potentially increasing trust in match outcomes and influencing future decision‑making processes.
