President Trump Reverses Plan to Livestream Nidal Hasan Execution

· World · Indian Express, Reuters

US President Donald Trump reversed his approval for livestreaming the execution of former US Army Major Nidal Hasan by firing squad. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth had previously proposed livestreaming the execution, which received Pentagon approval for December 3. Writing on Truth Social, President Trump stated that while streaming might have served as a deterrent, many well-meaning individuals preferred not to watch Hasan die. Hasan was sentenced to death by a military tribunal after shooting and killing 13 people at the Fort Hood US Army post in Texas in 2009. The planned event would have marked the United States' first public execution in exactly 90 years and the first military execution of any kind since 1961.

Why it matters

The decision averted what would have been the first public execution in the US in nine decades, raising questions about transparency and the spectacle of capital punishment in modern governance.
