Prime Minister Modi Urges Citizen Participation In Census 2027
· India · LiveMint, The Hindu
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to participate in the ongoing Census 2027 exercise during the 138th episode of his Mann ki Baat radio programme on Sunday. He noted that the first phase of the decennial exercise is nearing completion, with data from more than 320 million families already recorded across 31 states and Union territories. Census 2027 is India’s first fully digital census, featuring a self-enumeration facility that allows citizens to submit household details online in 16 languages. Population enumeration is currently underway in snow-bound areas including Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The exercise was originally scheduled for 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why it matters
The digital census provides critical demographic data that dictates public policy, resource allocation, and welfare distribution across India for the coming decade.
