Princess Diana's Iconic 'Revenge Dress' Heads to Auction at Sotheby's

· Entertainment · The Independent, BBC News, CNN

The black silk 'revenge dress' worn by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, is heading to auction at Sotheby's in New York in December. Designed by Christina Stambolian, the dress gained worldwide fame in 1994 when Diana wore it to a Vanity Fair fundraising dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London on the same evening Prince Charles confessed to his affair. The outfit broke royal dress traditions with its plunging neckline, above-the-knee hemline, and bright red nail enamel. Expected to fetch between 150,000 and 300,000 dollars, the dress will embark on a global exhibition tour stopping in Hong Kong, Geneva, London, and New York. A portion of the sale proceeds will be donated to the NHS Lothian Charity on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

Why it matters

The auction offers collectors a rare piece of modern fashion and royal history while supporting charitable healthcare initiatives in Edinburgh.
