Private Fuel Retailers Start Rationing Diesel Sales Amid Price Surge

· Business · Times of India, MarketWatch, InsideEVs

Private fuel retailers in India have begun rationing diesel sales at their outlets following a sharp surge in global crude prices driven by the ongoing West Asia conflict. Jio-BP outlets have introduced a cap of 50 litres per customer with a daily ceiling of 6,000 litres, while Nayara Energy stations have implemented transaction limits ranging from 70 to 200 litres. State-owned oil marketing companies Indian Oil, HPCL, and BPCL confirmed there are no restrictions at their fuel stations. Public sector operators control approximately 90% of the country's more than one lakh fuel pumps, limiting the overall impact. The restrictions are expected to primarily affect long-haul commercial vehicles operating in remote areas.

Why it matters

Commercial transport operators and logistics firms face potential delays and higher operational friction due to fuel purchasing caps at private stations.
