Private Players Eye Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors for India Nuclear Expansion

Indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) are emerging as the preferred technology for private companies entering India's civil nuclear power sector. Representatives from NTPC, Adani Atomic Energy, and Jindal Steel stated at a BloombergNEF Summit panel in New Delhi that existing 700 megawatt-electric PHWR technology offers a reliable starting point due to established design standards and a mature domestic supply chain that is 90 to 95 percent indigenized. NTPC has set a capacity target of 30 gigawatts electric, while Jindal Steel aims for 18 gigawatts electric and Adani group targets 10 gigawatts electric as India strives toward 100 gigawatts electric of nuclear capacity by 2047. The discussion follows the recent release of draft rules under the SHANTI Act, which establishes a regulatory framework for private participation and nuclear liability.
