Prosecution Seeks Death Penalty for Five Convicts in Bhayli Gang Rape Case
· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express, The Hindu
The prosecution in Vadodara has sought the death penalty or, alternatively, life imprisonment for five men convicted in the 2024 Bhayli gang rape case. The Vadodara POCSO court heard arguments on the quantum of punishment and scheduled the sentencing for August 31. The five convicts were found guilty on August 20 for the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl on October 4, 2024, during the Navratri festival. Defence counsel sought minimum punishment, citing the convicts' families and young children, but the prosecution opposed the plea based on the gravity of the crime. The trial involved the examination of 45 witnesses alongside CCTV footage and medical evidence.
Why it matters
The case highlights judicial accountability in heinous crimes against minors and sets a critical precedent for fast-track POCSO trials in Gujarat.
