Prosecutors Claim OpenAI Bugging Suspect Had Frequent Contact With Saudi Royal

· World · CNBC, New York Times

Federal prosecutors revealed in a San Francisco court filing that Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national accused of planting a recording device in an OpenAI conference room, communicated frequently via WhatsApp with a member of the Saudi Royal Family through 2025 and 2026. The U.S. Attorney's Office is seeking to detain Alfozan without bail, warning that his conduct poses a danger to United States national security. The recording device was allegedly installed on September 28 in the back of a television in a room where OpenAI executives met with government officials. Alfozan was arrested on October 9, shortly after which his wife and baby flew to Saudi Arabia. Prosecutors stated that the Saudi royal had urged Alfozan to join a new artificial intelligence initiative in Saudi Arabia, telling him in May 2026 that the kingdom needed him more than the United States.
