Protesters Hide in Washrooms, Gurdwara Amid Delhi CEC Resignation Clampdown

· India · The Hindu, Times of India, India Today

On October 10, 2026, protesters from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar hid in public washrooms and a gurdwara in Connaught Place to evade police during a capital-wide crackdown. More than 20 young protesters spent the night in an NDMC washroom, which locks at 10 p.m. and reopens at 6 a.m., before being discovered by police during an inspection. Some protesters allegedly forced open the washroom door to enter, and were subsequently rounded up and bundled into detention vehicles, most with faces covered. During detention, they continued raising slogans and banging against police vehicle interiors, with voices audible through netted windows. Two Delhi Police personnel, including a Pink Force member, were injured during the detention of protesters. The protests also demanded the rollback of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and occurred amid thousands of police and paramilitary personnel deployed across Delhi.

Why it matters

The incident highlights the lengths to which protesters are going to avoid detention during demonstrations against electoral authorities in Delhi. It underscores the heightened tension between civil society groups and law enforcement over demands for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.
