· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, LiveMint
Students of Lovely Professional University staged a protest and blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway over claims that a female student was raped by an outsider on the campus. Protesters set police vehicles on fire, vandalised shops in the university mall, and damaged property during a rampage outside the campus. Police registered a rape case against an unknown person based on a student complaint and formed a special investigation team to look into the matter. Lovely Professional University stated in an official release that there was no truth to the rumours. Traffic was diverted from the affected highway stretch as the blockade continued into Sunday afternoon.
Why it matters
The campus unrest led to major traffic disruptions on a key national highway and prompted a police investigation into the safety and security measures at the private university.
