Pune Civic Body Awaits State Directive on Potential Water Cuts From October 16

· India · Indian Express, NDTV

The Pune Municipal Corporation is likely to implement weekly water cuts starting October 16 after the Maharashtra Government ordered local civic bodies and gram panchayats to reduce water supply by at least 10 per cent. The state government order comes amid concerns over dwindling water reserves, drought-like conditions, and the risk of prolonged water stress linked to El Niño. Although four major dams supplying water to Pune city are filled to capacity, their water is expected to meet the needs of drought-affected talukas in Pune district. To ensure available water lasts until the next monsoon in July 2027, the civic administration has prepared for weekly water restrictions. However, civic water supply department in-charge Nandkishor Jagtap stated that the cuts will only be considered after receiving written communication from the state government.

Why it matters

Pune residents face potential weekly water supply reductions that could alter daily domestic routines and heighten conservation efforts across the city.
