Pune Records Driest October Since 2014 With Just 1.7 mm Rain at Shivajinagar

· India · Indian Express, LiveMint

Pune's primary IMD station at Shivajinagar recorded only 1.7 mm of rainfall in October 2026, the lowest for the month since 2014. The figure contrasts sharply with 18.6 mm in 2023, 61.2 mm in 2024 and 67.3 mm in 2025. The average temperature reached 34.66°C, making the month unusually warm and uncomfortable. Experts attribute the dryness to the early withdrawal of the southwest monsoon on October 3, nearly a week before the normal date, and the absence of post-monsoon thunderstorms triggered by Bay of Bengal systems. An anticyclone forming early over Gujarat kept Maharashtra under dry, cloud-free conditions, while the easterly trough that usually transports moisture inland failed to develop. On October 31, isolated stations such as Bhor (67 mm) and Shirur (45.5 mm) received heavy rain, but Shivajinagar remained dry.

Why it matters

The near-total absence of October rain and higher temperatures strain water resources and increase discomfort for Pune's residents, while signalling a shift in post-monsoon weather patterns that could affect agriculture and urban planning in western Maharashtra.
