Pune Student Released From Jail After Bombay High Court Grants Bail
· India · The Hindu, Bar and Bench
A 19-year-old engineering student from Jammu and Kashmir was released from Yerwada Central Jail in Pune on Tuesday night following a Bombay High Court order. The court granted her bail while sharply rebuking the Maharashtra government and her educational institution over her arrest and subsequent rustication. The student had been arrested by Kondhwa police on May 9, 2025, after sharing an Instagram post from an account called Reformistan that criticized the Indian government during Indo-Pak hostilities under Operation Sindoor. The High Court quashed the First Information Report against her and suspended the rustication order issued by the Sinhgad Academy of Engineering. The court directed the institution to provide her with a hall ticket so she can appear for her ongoing semester exams.
Why it matters
The ruling sets a significant legal precedent regarding free speech limitations on social media and the protection of student rights against harsh state and institutional punitive measures.
