Punjab and Haryana High Court Relieves Brothers in 30-Year-Old Assault Case

The Punjab and Haryana High Court upheld the conviction of two brothers in a 1996 assault case but reduced their sentences to the period already served. The decades-old dispute began after the brothers' dog ate a buffalo placenta hanging from a newborn calf in October 1996. Complainant Om Parkash stated that the brothers refused to restrain the dog when asked, leading to an altercation where the accused were armed with a chopping tool and weapons. The trial court initially sentenced the brothers to three years in jail, a penalty upheld by a fast-track court in February 2008. Justice Mandeep Pannu noted on September 7 that the petitioners are now aged 52 and 56 and ordered each to pay Rs 4,250 as compensation to the injured person.
Why it matters
The ruling provides legal closure after three decades of criminal proceedings arising from a minor rural dispute over livestock in Punjab and Haryana.
