Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Skips Chief Justice Oath Ceremony

· India · Indian Express, News18

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was absent from the oath-taking ceremony of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as the new Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday. The ceremony was held at Lok Bhawan in Chandigarh and was attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. The Punjab cabinet had passed a resolution on Sunday demanding that the appointment and oath-taking be put on hold, citing that the Centre did not wait for the state government's views. Justice Mishra, who previously served at the Allahabad High Court, was appointed by the President under Article 217(1) of the Constitution. The Centre had previously tasked Justice Mishra with performing the duties of the Chief Justice following the elevation of former Chief Justice Sheel Nagu to the Supreme Court.

Why it matters

The incident signals a deepening administrative friction between the Punjab government and the Centre regarding judicial appointments. This standoff highlights the ongoing debate over the role of state governments in the selection process for High Court leadership.
