Punjab Government Confirms Schools Will Remain Open During Friday Bandh

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

The Punjab state government has clarified that schools and colleges will remain open during the 'Punjab Bandh' called for Friday, August 21. Education Secretary Sonali Giri stated that no official instructions have been issued to close educational institutions across the state. However, the Ludhiana CBSE coordinator noted that individual schools may decide whether to operate based on their local circumstances. The bandh was called by the Qaumi Insaf Morcha to demand the release of Sikh prisoners, including Jagtar Singh Hawara, who is serving a life sentence for the 1995 assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. Protesters have also sought the release of Balwant Singh Rajoana and Devinderpal Singh Bhullar.

Why it matters

The bandh call affects daily operations for students and commuters across Punjab, though the government's stance provides clarity for school administrators and parents.
