Puri Jagannath Airport Receives Final Environmental Clearance
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
The proposed Shree Jagannath International Airport in Puri, Odisha, has secured final environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The project is set to occupy 471.348 hectares, including 27.887 hectares of forest land, located approximately 5 km from the Jagannath temple. Officials confirmed the airport will handle 4.6 million passengers annually in its first phase, with capacity projected to reach 16.69 million by Phase-III. Despite the approval, the project has faced criticism from wildlife experts regarding its potential impact on migratory birds and endangered marine species. The state government is now awaiting a formal no-objection certificate before approaching the Airports Authority of India to finalize the detailed project report.
Why it matters
The airport is expected to significantly boost tourism and connectivity to the Jagannath temple, though it remains a point of contention for environmentalists concerned about local wildlife habitats.
