Putin Tells African Leaders Moscow Rejects Neo-Colonialism

· World · Al Jazeera, Fortune

President Vladimir Putin told visiting African leaders in Moscow that Russia does not engage in neo-colonial exploitation, contrasting Moscow's approach with Western powers. Speaking at the third Russia-Africa Summit on Wednesday, Putin accused Western countries of using debt and predatory financial terms to hinder development on the continent. He stated that Russian businesses focus on local raw material processing to create jobs and generate tax revenue rather than extracting resources. Putin addressed delegations from 48 African countries, including 22 heads of state, noting that Russia supplied 13 million metric tonnes of agricultural products in the first nine months of the year. The summit takes place as Black Sea attacks disrupt grain exports from Russia and Ukraine, and Middle East conflict impacts global fertiliser supplies.

Why it matters

The summit highlights Russia's ongoing diplomatic and economic outreach to African nations to secure resource partnerships and agricultural supply routes amid Western sanctions.
