Pygmy hog population in Assam grows to 194 under conservation efforts

The population of the endangered pygmy hog, once thought to be extinct, has increased from six individuals in 1996 to 194 today. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed this recovery to dedicated efforts and the Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme (PHCP). This small mammal stands about 25 CM tall and weighs up to 9.7 kg, found nowhere else in India. The current conservation goal is to increase the population to 300 by 2040 to ensure the species can thrive in the wild.

This recovery demonstrates the effectiveness of captive breeding and reintroduction programs for critically endangered species in Northeast India.
