Qantas Cancels Rome to Perth Flight After Bedbug Outbreak
· World · BBC News, NDTV
Qantas cancelled a Saturday flight from Rome to Perth after an outbreak of bedbugs was discovered in the economy cabin of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Passengers on the previous 17-hour journey from Perth to Rome reported being bitten by bugs and were given antihistamines until airline supplies ran out. The aircraft was grounded to allow maintenance teams and engineers to carry out a deep clean of affected seats. Qantas provided all affected customers with accommodation and rebooked them on alternative flights within 48 hours of their original departure. Bedbug infestations have previously caused disruptions for other carriers, including British Airways and Turkish Airlines.
Why it matters
Passengers travelling on long-haul routes face sudden flight cancellations and discomfort, while airlines incur operational delays and cleaning costs.
