Qatar, Oman, Pakistan Diplomats Push Tehran for US-Iran Talks

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is in Tehran on Thursday for talks aimed at reviving failed US-Iran negotiations and de-escalating tensions. He is the third senior mediator to visit Iran within days, following Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir, who met President Masoud Pezeshkian and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Tehran on Monday, and Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who met Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday. Iran and Oman have agreed on a new temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, granting Tehran partial control over exit routes for vessels entering through Iranian waters. The strait, which carried more than one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies before Iran's closure in early March, has been mostly shut to shipping, triggering a global energy crisis. Qatar brokered a brief June MoU between Washington and Tehran that has since expired.
Why it matters
A reopened Strait of Hormuz would directly ease crude oil prices and global energy supply, affecting India's import bill and petrol costs. Failure of mediation risks a wider Middle East war with consequences for Indian diaspora, trade routes, and remittances from the Gulf.
