Qatar, UAE Back Ethiopia as Fighting Spreads Beyond Tigray

· World · Euronews, Al Jazeera

Qatar and the UAE have voiced support for Ethiopia's government amid renewed fighting that has displaced around 150,000 people. Qatar condemned military escalation against federal forces, calling for protection of civilians and adherence to the Pretoria Peace Agreement. The UAE accused Tigrayan forces of attacking federal troops and seizing airports in Tigray, extending hostilities into Afar and Amhara regions. Tigrayan forces captured Erebti in Afar, while pro-government troops took Alamata, a key supply town south of Mekelle. A drone strike hit Tigrai TV's headquarters in Mekelle, with no reported casualties. Hospitals in Korem and Alamata treated over 420 wounded between 22-25 September.

Why it matters

The conflict threatens Ethiopia's stability and the broader Horn of Africa, with Qatar and the UAE taking sides in a war that has already killed hundreds of thousands.
