Rahul Gandhi Alleges BJP Conspiracy Over Voter ID Welfare Link
· India · Times of India, Indian Express
Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused the Centre of a deep conspiracy after Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh announced that voter ID cards would replace Aadhaar to identify beneficiaries for panchayati raj welfare programmes. In a post on X, Gandhi claimed that the policy change is linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which he alleged has removed millions of names, particularly targeting critics of the BJP. He also criticized Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the Election Commission of collusion with the ruling party in vote manipulation. Gandhi warned that tying welfare benefits to voter identification could ultimately jeopardize access to essential services such as rations, pensions, MGNREGA wages, housing assistance, scholarships, and reservations.
Why it matters
Linking social welfare eligibility to voter identification directly threatens the livelihood and statutory benefits of millions of citizens if electoral rolls undergo contested revisions.
