Rahul Gandhi Gives Water To Police During Detention

· India · Hindustan Times, Times of India

Rahul Gandhi handed out water bottles to Delhi Police personnel after being detained while en route to Jantar Mantar for a protest sit-in on October 7, 2026. He was accompanied by other INDIA bloc MPs, including his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who were also briefly detained. The protest demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision process. Rahul was heard telling police they were "doing good work" as he distributed the water bottles. The INDIA bloc continued its protest after being released, having previously marched from Parliament to the Election Commission office on Day 1. Delhi Police have registered FIRs against Rahul and several other MPs in connection with the protests.

Why it matters

The protest directly challenges the integrity of India's electoral roll revision process, affecting millions of voters allegedly stripped of their rights. Continued opposition action could escalate tensions between the INDIA bloc and the Election Commission ahead of future elections.
