Rahul Gandhi Summons NSUI Leaders Over Delhi University Poll Defeat
· India · Indian Express, India Today
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi summoned NSUI in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar and president Vinod Jakhar to seek explanations following the student wing's rout in the Delhi University Students Union elections. For the first time in over a decade, the Congress-backed National Students Union of India failed to win a single seat in the four-member central panel. Gandhi questioned the leaders about the strategy behind the defeat and specifically asked why Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, who left the NSUI, was not accommodated with a ticket. While Kumar and Jakhar cited unreasonable conditions raised by Shokeen, Gandhi remained dissatisfied with the handling of the situation. The RSS-linked ABVP secured the president, secretary, and joint-secretary posts, while Shokeen won the vice-president position.
Why it matters
The defeat in campus elections deals a setback to the Congress party's ongoing Gen-Z outreach efforts and youth engagement strategy led by Rahul Gandhi.
