Rahul Gandhi to Lunch with Tamil Nadu CM Vijay After Chennai Arrival
· India · Indian Express, NDTV, India Today
Rahul Gandhi arrived in Chennai on Saturday and met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay for lunch at Vijay’s Neelankarai residence at 1.30 pm. Gandhi had arrived at Chennai airport around 12.30 pm before the meeting. At 5 pm, Gandhi will address students at Maanavargalin Kural — Voice of Students — at Island Grounds, focusing on examinations, education costs, and unemployment. The visit follows a crackdown on protests in Delhi and marks Gandhi’s most significant political engagement in Tamil Nadu after a long absence. Gandhi last visited Tamil Nadu politically after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but did not return to thank Congress workers despite the party winning nine seats in the state. His limited appearances had drawn complaints from the state Congress unit.
Why it matters
The meeting signals a shift in Tamil Nadu politics as Gandhi strengthens ties with Vijay’s government after leaving the DMK alliance. It also highlights Gandhi’s effort to re-engage with Tamil Nadu voters ahead of future elections, addressing concerns over his prior absence from the state.
