Rail track watch begins as Cyclone Arnab nears coastal India
· India · Indian Express
Indian Railways placed 600 km of track under close watch as Tropical Cyclone TC02B (Arnab) approaches land on October 28. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a review meeting in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam and activated war rooms at zonal, divisional and Railway Board levels. Over 70 trains were cancelled and routes for two others were altered to protect passengers. Relief wagons, diesel locomotives, power units, ambulances, earthmovers and tree cutters are stationed at strategic points to expedite restoration after the cyclone. Vaishnaw said passenger safety remains the top priority, with senior officials overseeing all preparations and response arrangements.
Why it matters
More than 70 train services are cancelled and routes altered, directly impacting millions of Indian commuters and regional connectivity in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The deployment of relief equipment and emergency teams at key junctions will help restore rail operations quickly after the storm, reducing economic disruption and ensuring aid can move efficiently.
