The Union Ministry of Railways has officially approved the merger of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). A draft memorandum of understanding signed between Southern Railway and the Tamil Nadu government outlines the transfer of assets and maintenance responsibilities. While Southern Railway will handle core operations for now, a two-year transition period is set for the full handover of train services to CMRL. The project, which dates back to the 1975 First Master Plan, includes 21 railway stations, with 19 currently slated for transfer. The state government is required to complete payment obligations during the transition phase.
