Railways Extends Optional Travel Insurance Scheme To Reservation Counters From October 27
· Business · Times of India, Indian Express
Indian Railways will extend its Optional Travel Insurance Scheme to passengers booking reserved tickets through Passenger Reservation System counters starting October 27. Complying with a Supreme Court directive from October 6 in the Union of India versus Radha Yadav case, the Railway Board ordered all zonal railways to implement the setup. Passengers can opt for insurance by paying a premium of 45 paise per passenger, which provides coverage of up to ₹10 lakh for death or permanent total disability arising from railway accidents. The policy also offers ₹7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, up to ₹2 lakh for hospitalisation expenses, and ₹10,000 for transporting mortal remains. Reservation staff must inform passengers about the option, which requires a mobile number and digital payment.
Why it matters
The scheme broadens accident insurance access for millions of passengers who book traditional physical tickets at railway counters.
