Rain, Narrow Gates, Mic Warning Led to Kolkata Stampede Killing 19

· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express

An hour of rain slicked streets but did not deter revellers from Durga Puja pandals on Saptami, October 18, 2026. A cramped bylane with narrow entry and exit gates at Chore Bagan in north Kolkata contributed to the stampede around 7.30pm. Lack of crowd management and a mic announcement warning of possible structural collapse exacerbated the situation. Eyewitnesses said rain drove devotees into the pandal seeking cover, while those inside refused to leave, causing a surge. People slipped and fell, triggering a cascade that left 19 dead. Seven people have been arrested so far.

Why it matters

Nineteen people died in one of Kolkata's oldest Durga Puja pandals, affecting families from Bihar and local residents. The incident has prompted the formation of a Special Investigation Team headed by a sitting Calcutta High Court judge.
