· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the Indian Navy's first indigenously built Fleet Support Ship named Surya at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday. Built with 82 percent Indian content, the 43,500-tonne vessel measures 223.6 metres in length and is designed to refuel and resupply multiple warships simultaneously at sea. During the ceremony, Mr. Singh also laid the keel for the fifth vessel in the series, FSS-5, and inaugurated HSL's newly modernised Slipway No. 4 alongside a 300-tonne Goliath crane. The upgraded shipyard facilities expand its covered building dock capacity to 80,000 DWT, enabling the construction of naval platforms up to 45,000 DWT. The event was attended by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and HSL Chairman Rear Admiral C. Raghuram.
Why it matters
The commissioning of indigenous fleet support vessels enhances the Indian Navy's operational endurance and combat readiness by enabling extended deployments without returning to port.
