Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for five brownfield defence projects in West Bengal, valued at approximately Rs 3,500 crore. The initiative includes three projects for Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and two for Yantra India Limited, aimed at boosting shipbuilding and precision engineering. The Raichak facility will be equipped to handle warships up to 200 metres in length, enabling the shipyard to bid for next-generation destroyers. Singh stated the investment marks a shift for the state toward industrial growth and away from factory closures. The projects also involve modernising the Metal and Steel Factory in Ishapore.
Why it matters
The expansion aims to strengthen India's indigenous defence manufacturing and shipbuilding capabilities while creating new jobs and supporting MSMEs in West Bengal.
