Ramayana producer Namit Malhotra reveals he lost 90% of his wealth in 2008

· Entertainment · Indian Express, Bollywood Hungama

Namit Malhotra, producer of the Rs 4000 crore Ramayana adaptation, disclosed he lost 90% of his wealth during the 2008 global financial crisis. The 50-year-old filmmaker moved to the US in 2007 to build a global company bridging Indian and Western talent, but the recession devastated his plans. His company DNEG has since won eight Academy Awards, seven in the last eleven years for visual effects. Malhotra recently presented the film at the Academy Theatre in Los Angeles ahead of its November 5 worldwide release.

Why it matters

Malhotra's recovery from near-total financial loss to helming India's costliest film illustrates how the 2008 crisis impacted immigrant entrepreneurs, and his success may revive interest in large-scale Indian epics globally.
