RBI Deputy Governor Sees Potential for Rupee Stabilisation and Appreciation
· Business · Economic Times, Business Standard
Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta stated that the rupee's 13.1% depreciation since March 2025 is likely a temporary phenomenon. Speaking at a State Bank of India event in Mumbai, Gupta noted that the currency does not currently reflect the strength of India's underlying economy, which is projected to grow by 7-8%. While the rupee hit a record low of 96.96 in May 2026, recent government and central bank measures have helped it stabilise around 95.74. Gupta expects balance of payments pressures to ease as foreign direct investment rises and corporate balance sheets remain healthy. She added that the RBI maintains sufficient resources to ensure orderly conditions in the foreign exchange market.
Why it matters
A stronger rupee could help lower import costs for essential commodities like oil and gold, potentially easing inflationary pressures for Indian consumers and businesses.
