Rebel TMC MP Claims 17 NCPI Lawmakers To Join BJP
· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times, Zee News
Cooch Behar MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia claimed on Monday that 17 of the 20 MPs who formed the Nationalist Citizens Party of India are set to join the BJP around the Durga Puja festival in October. Basunia stated that the mass defection is intended to bypass the anti-defection law, which requires a two-thirds majority for a party merger to be legally recognized. He added that three other MPs, including Yusuf Pathan, would support the NDA from outside rather than formally joining the BJP. These 20 MPs had previously broken away from the Trinamool Congress in June to align with the NDA. The announcement follows recent protests against Basunia and his wife in their home constituency of Sitai.
Why it matters
The potential mass defection of these MPs could significantly alter the parliamentary strength of the ruling NDA and further weaken the Trinamool Congress's position.
