Recursive Launches Flint Laptop Coding Model Built Largely by AI
· Technology · TechCrunch
AI startup Recursive has launched Flint, a free coding model that can run on a laptop and was developed largely with the help of artificial intelligence. The company's automated research system, the Eureka Machine, assisted with nearly every step of the development, allowing a small team to build the model from scratch in under four months. Flint is a mixture-of-experts model that uses just 2.5 billion of its 40 billion parameters at a time, making it lightweight enough to run locally and offline on personal computers. In company tests on a MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro chip, Flint generated about 131 tokens per second, outperforming several competing models. The model is available to download for free on Hugging Face under the Apache 2.0 open-source license.
Why it matters
Flint allows software developers to run advanced coding models locally and offline without paying cloud usage fees or compromising code privacy.
